I loved the students. I was assigned to one of the best teachers in the building, and that year was energizing and fulfilling.<\/p><p>The following school year, I was placed in a different classroom.<\/p><p>Most paraprofessionals didn&#8217;t enjoy working with this particular teacher. In fact, staff rotated yearly so that no one had to stay in that classroom longer than one year.<\/p><p>That was the year I started having persistent stomach pain.<\/p><p>I went to the doctor. We ran tests. Nothing significant showed up.<\/p><p>But the pain was real.<\/p><p>It wasn&#8217;t until later that I realized what was happening: my body was responding to chronic stress.<\/p><p>I wasn&#8217;t in a crisis. I wasn&#8217;t being yelled at daily. It&#8217;s the quiet accumulation of daily stress that your nervous system never gets to release.<\/p><p>When we stay in environments that feel misaligned, unpredictable, or emotionally taxing, the body can begin to manifest symptoms such as:<\/p><ul><li>Shoulder tension that never fully releases<\/li><li>Trouble sleeping even when you&#8217;re exhausted<\/li><li>Digestive issues with no clear medical cause<\/li><li>Irritability that feels &#8220;not quite like you&#8221;<\/li><li>A sense of always being &#8220;on&#8221;<\/li><\/ul><p>You&#8217;re still functioning. Still productive. Still reliable.<\/p><p>But your body feels tight.<\/p><p>Chronic stress is the quiet accumulation of activation your nervous system never gets to discharge.<\/p><p>The gut and brain are deeply connected through the gut-brain axis. Case notes done a certain way. Within a certain timeframe. Balancing presence with productivity.<\/p><p>When I notice that tension, I know it&#8217;s time to intervene.<\/p><p>That might look like:<\/p><ul><li>Spacing appointments instead of stacking them<\/li><li>Protecting an uninterrupted lunch<\/li><li>Leaving white space in my calendar<\/li><li>Choosing rest on the weekend instead of another to-do list<\/li><\/ul><p>And every time I pull back, I relearn something important:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a072aec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a072aec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>The work still gets done. The world doesn&#8217;t fall apart. You may still be functioning \u2014 still showing up, still doing the work \u2014 but you&#8217;re operating with a depleted nervous system. You feel stretched, tense, and overwhelmed, but you still have emotional engagement and some capacity to care.<\/p><p><strong>Burnout<\/strong><\/p><p>Burnout is what happens when chronic stress goes unaddressed over time. It&#8217;s characterized by three core experiences:<\/p><ul><li>Emotional exhaustion \u2014 feeling completely drained, with nothing left to give<\/li><li>Depersonalization \u2014 becoming detached, cynical, or numb toward your work or the people in it<\/li><li>Reduced sense of personal accomplishment \u2014 feeling ineffective, like your efforts don&#8217;t matter<\/li><\/ul><p>Burnout is harder to recover from than chronic stress.
